Family's tribute to "one of the last gentlemen in life” who died in Brandon collision

A man who died in a collision has been described by his family as “one of the last gentlemen in life”.

Paul Smith was struck by a van on Sawmills Lane, in Brandon, on Friday evening (January 9).

The 60-year-old sustained serious injuries and was taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment.

Sadly, he died in hospital yesterday afternoon as a result of his injuries.

He leaves behind his heartbroken nieces, who today paid tribute to their uncle.

“Uncle Paul was one of the last gentlemen in life; he was kind, considerate, thoughtful and polite, and he always thought of others before himself,” they said.

“Uncle Paul was the most positive person ever and didn’t let anything get him down. He lived a full and happy life, despite the challenges he faced throughout his life.

“He loved all sports and was a long-time member of Durham County Cricket Club where he spent many a happy hour.

“He also loved a flutter on the horseracing and a pint or a game of bingo with his friends.

“He was a friend to many and will be greatly missed not just by his family, but all of the many, many people who knew him and the community of Brandon.”

The incident happened at 4.45pm and involved a white Citroen Dispatch.

The driver of the van was uninjured.

Officers are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision.

The road was busy with vehicles at the time, and investigators would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who may have dashcam footage that could assist their enquiries.
