Man arrested after suspected hit-and-run

A man has been arrested following a suspected hit-and-run in Consett last night.

Sherburn Terrace was closed after a pedestrian was hit by a van at around 9.45pm.

The victim, a 33-year-old man, suffered serious head injuries and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle, for treatment. His condition has been described as critical but stable.

The van driver, a 29-year-old man, was identified, arrested and taken into police custody where he remains.

The road was closed for several hours whilst officers conduct their enquiries. It has now reopened.

The investigation is ongoing and officers are appealing for anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward.
