Bikes seized and four arrested following pursuits

The bike was spotted in Fishburn by one of the traffic cars and immediately made off. A pursuit began and the rider, who wasn’t wearing a helmet, crashed the bike before trying to run off. He was chased down and arrested on suspicion of driving offences and domestic offences. Further checks also revealed he was wanted on recall to prison.

 

The bike was seized and checks further revealed it had been stolen from outside the force. Enquiries are now underway to reunite it with its owner.

 

Later in the day officers from the Motorcycle Section also spotted a Piaggio being ridden in Crook by three suspects, without registration plates and with none of them wearing helmets.

 

Unsurprisingly the rider made off when he spotted officers and a pursuit began.

During the pursuit, an accomplice who was nearby decided to try and block the police bikes to allow the suspects to escape.

 

This didn’t work.

 

The riders decamped from the bike and ran off. One of the pillion passengers was apprehended at the scene and the rider was chased down with the help of PD Chewy a short time later.

 

The obstructing accomplice was also arrested.

 

Checks revealed the Piaggio had no traceable owner and is likely a pool vehicle. It was seized and is off to the crusher.

 

PC Simpson from the force’s Motorcycle Section said: “Criminals seem to think that they will not be pursued if they are not wearing a helmet. This is incorrect. It is not a get out of jail free card and we will continue to relentlessly pursue those who break the law and bring harm to our communities.

 

“Thankfully, we are seeing an increasing number of occasions where these individuals see a police motorcycle behind them and decide it is not worth the risk. This is correct. When they pull over, they can be dealt with without adding more serious offences. We would advise others to do the same so they don’t end up potentially committing more serious offences."
