Two arrested in tri-force rural crime operation

Two suspects got a visit from not one but three police forces this morning during an operation to combat rural crime.

Officers from Durham, Cumbria Police and Northumbria Police joined forces for the targeted strike under Operation Springfarm – a tri-force response to tackling burglaries which have taken place in rural areas in recent months.

The operation was also supported by the North East Regional Organised Crime Unit Network.

Digi dog PD Baxter and the force drone were also deployed as one suspect tried to leg it over some back gardens. He was swiftly chased down and arrested on suspicion of burglary.

A second man, 26, was also arrested on suspicion of burglary and failing to provide.

Both men were taken into police custody where they remain today.

Force rural lead, Inspector Andy Reeves, said: “Rural criminals often cross borders thinking they can get away with offences.

“Unfortunately for them, we are always working behind the scenes with our neighbouring forces to trace evidence back to them and we will continue to put those who think they can target our rural communities before the courts.”
