Man arrested after blowing four-times over the legal drink drive limit

While many people were watching England's match last night, one motorist was making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

A 49-year-old man has been charged with two drink-driving offences after officers from Durham Constabulary's Roads & Armed Policing Unit stopped an Audi A5 being driven in the middle of the road in Newton Aycliffe.

The driver provided a roadside breath test reading of 160 – more than four times the legal alcohol limit.

Officers stopped the vehicle before anyone was injured, preventing what could have been a devastating incident.

The man has since been charged with two counts of drink driving and remanded to appear before the court.

The arrest serves as another stark reminder of the dangers posed by drink driving. Every year, officers are faced with the heartbreaking task of informing families that a loved one has been killed or seriously injured in a collision involving an impaired driver.

Meanwhile, officers also carried out proactive random stop checks in Chester Moor this morning, where more than 100 motorists were breathalysed.

Thankfully, every driver recorded a reading of zero, demonstrating that the overwhelming majority of motorists are making the right choice and helping to keep County Durham's roads safe.

With England back in action this weekend, Durham Constabulary is reminding supporters to plan ahead if they intend to drink.
