Underage test purchasing carried out across County Durham

Last week, officers and PCSOs were out alongside police cadets as part of Op Sceptre, carrying out test purchase inspections to ensure retailers are following the law around knife sales.

Trained cadets under the age of 18 attempted to purchase knives at businesses across County Durham. Under the Think 25 policy, anyone who appears under 25 should be asked to provide valid proof of age before purchasing age-restricted items.

We’re pleased to report that all four businesses visited in Dalton Park, Chester-le-Street, Bishop Auckland and Newton Aycliffe passed the checks, with every retailer refusing the sale of a knife to our cadets.

In Darlington, local beat officers also spoke with retailers about knife crime and reminded businesses of their responsibilities when selling knives and bladed items. Posters have also been distributed to retailers in the town centre, as well as more than 700 retail staff through ShopWatch groups across the county.
