When caring for someone you love, peace of mind matters more than anything.
Ray and Greta recently completed the Herbert Protocol with support from our Bishop Auckland police team and have shared their experience with us during Dementia Action Week.
Greta said: “At first, Ray wasn’t sure, telling me: “Greta, I don’t need this.” But after a conversation with our PCSO he realised it was simply about keeping him safe and helping me too.”
The protocol records vital information such as a person’s physical description any significant locations from their past, places they may instinctively try to find if disoriented and any medical issues including medication they may take.
“It ensures that the police have immediate access to potentially life-saving information if he ever disappears” she added.
For Greta, completing the form means reassurance and readiness.
“Having this document ready gives me peace of mind, knowing I won’t have to struggle to recall all the details during an emergency and won’t miss anything out,” she said.
“The whole experience was handled with care and understanding, and it highlights why the Herbert Protocol is such an important tool for families supporting someone living with dementia.
“If you’re in a similar situation, consider registering. It’s a simple step that can make a real difference.”
In 2026 so far, we have received over 200 incidents into our control room that have been tagged under the Herbert Protocol.
