Hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of stolen equipment recovered

A significant quantity of stolen machinery, vehicles, and trailers valued at hundreds of thousands of pounds has been recovered following a coordinated operation led by the Peterlee Neighbourhood Policing Team.

The recovery, supported by our roads policing unit and colleagues from Northumbria Police, took place earlier this week in the Hebburn area of South Tyneside. The seized items are believed to have been stolen from locations across the country.

The operation was initiated following multiple reports of stolen equipment across County Durham. A PCSO from the local NPT reviewed CCTV footage showing plant machinery being towed by a Land Rover. Working closely with the force’s intelligence unit, officers were able to identify and locate the stolen property to an address and swiftly acted.

Rural crime lead at Durham Constabulary, Inspector Andy Reeves said: “The theft of equipment and vehicles causes significant disruption to livelihoods, particularly within the agricultural and construction sectors. Through proactive policing and strong partnership working, we have been able to recover a substantial haul of stolen items and prevent further harm.

“Officers continue to work under Rurali, the force’s dedicated initiative aimed at tackling issues affecting rural communities and strengthening collaboration with residents.

“Rural crime, including the theft of machinery, plant, and vehicles, can have a devastating impact on farmers, businesses, and communities across the county.

“We remain committed to taking robust action against those involved in rural crime and will continue to protect the communities we serve.”

A 41-year-old man was arrested in connection with the theft. An investigation is now ongoing.
