Officers are appealing for information following a fatal road traffic collision on the A688 in Staindrop last night.
The four-vehicle collision happened at 6.30pm and involved two motorbikes and two cars.
The motorbikes are believed to have been travelling side-by-side when a collision has taken place.
Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, one rider – a man in his 30s - has sadly died at the scene.
His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
The second rider sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment where he remains.
Neither of the car drivers are believed to have been injured but the driver of a Nissan Note was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by careless driving, driving with a proportion of a specified controlled drug above the specified limit and driving whilst unfit through drugs.
