Four driving licences revoked under Operation Dark Night

Four drivers have had their licences revoked following a specialist operation to check drivers’ eyesight.

Operation Dark Night was organised by Durham Roads and Armed Policing, with 291 drivers taking part to check they were fit to drive.

The majority of drivers passed the test of reading our registration plate from 20m with flying colours but four – a man aged 82 and three women aged 70, 72 and 82 – did not meet the standard.

All four had their driving licences revoked at the roadside under Cassie’s Law.

Strategic Roads Policing Inspector, Andrew Howarth, said: “It is your responsibility as a driver to make sure you are fit to drive and whilst we do not believe these drivers intended to drive knowing they were unfit; there is no excuse for being unfit to drive as we know this is a key factor in serious injuries and even fatal collisions.

“We will continue to check eyesight all year round but as we enter the period of darker nights we would encourage drivers to make sure their eyesight is up to scratch and if they have any concerns, to reach out to their optician.

“We also want to thank the majority of drivers who have already done this and are doing their bit to help keep our roads safe.”
