Man arrested after fatal hit-and-run collision at Neville’s Cross

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following a fatal collision in the early hours of this morning.

Shortly before 2am, emergency services were called to Neville’s Cross on the A167 in Durham following reports of a collision between a woman and a car.

The 22-year-old woman was taken to the RVI, in Newcastle, but sadly died a short time later.

This evening, officers arrested a 37-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving a motor vehicle whilst unfit.

Two men, both aged 38, and a 59-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

All four have been taken into police custody where they remain.
The car involved in the collision failed to stop at the scene but has since been recovered.

Detective Chief Inspector Mel Sutherland, of Durham Constabulary, said: “I am grateful for the support we have received from the community so far.

“However, I would urge anyone who has yet to get in touch with us about this incident to do so.

“Our thoughts remain with the woman’s family at this extremely sad time, and we will continue to support them with our specially trained officers.”
