Four more boys have been arrested in connection with a suspected assault on two elderly men last week.
The incident took place on East Street, in Stanley, at around 7pm on Thursday, August 21.
Two boys aged 14, as well as a 16-year-old boy and a boy aged 13 were arrested over the weekend on suspicion of affray and taken into custody.
This follows a 14-year-old boy who was arrested on Friday.
All five boys have been released on bail while an investigation continues.
A man, in his 70s, sustained a cut to his lip but did not require hospital treatment.
A second victim, also in his 70s, will need dental treatment.
Both men have been left shaken by the attack and have been offered the appropriate support.
Officers are continuing to carry out extra patrols in the area and we urge anyone with any concerns to speak to them.
Stanley Neighbourhood Inspector Andy Liddell said: “Our officers have carried out extensive enquiries over the last few days and I am grateful for all their ongoing hard work.
“I would also like to thank the community for their support and information. We are continuing to carry out extra patrols and I would ask anyone with any concerns to speak to one of our officers.”
Witnesses who have not yet spoken to officers are asked to get in touch with Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident reference 418 of August 21.
We are aware of a video circulating on social media in relation to this and we understand it has caused upset and distress, but we would ask you to refrain from commenting until officers have concluded their investigation.
This is an active court case, and members of the public are asked not to post and share the videos. Doing so could put you in Contempt of Court which is a criminal offence that can carry a prison sentence.
