Violent man sentenced after unprovoked attacks on innocent people

Jason William Halliday appeared at court to be sentenced last Friday after pleading guilty to both assaults.

 

The first assault occurred in Chester-le-Street in August, 2022.

 

Halliday pulled up beside the victim as she walked home along Front Street after a night out. He then jumped out of the vehicle and began shouting at the woman before punching her to the floor.

 

He then made off in the vehicle, leaving the victim unconscious in the middle of the road. Members of the public rushed to her aid and called police and ambulance.

 

She was taken to hospital and Halliday was arrested.

 

And in February 2024, Halliday launched a second attack on a bouncer in Vibe nightclub in Peterlee.

 

When Halliday’s friends were asked to leave, he got agitated and struck the victim to the head causing him to fall to the floor. Whilst the victim was laying on the floor unconscious, Halliday repeatedly kicked and punched his body and face.

 

The 25-year-old, of Chester-Le-Street was charged with both assaults, he pled guilty at court hearing last year and was remanded into custody.

 

Halliday appeared at Durham Crown Court last Friday, January 31 and received a 15-month sentence.

 

Temporary Detective Sergeant Chris Keeler, from Durham’s Complex Safeguarding Team said: “In both cases, Halliday lost his temper and seriously assaulted two innocent members of the public.

 

“His actions left the victims with serious injuries and life-long trauma.

 

“I hope his admission and the sentence imposed brings them both some relief and they are now able to move on with their lives.”
