Darlington officers calm down care home resident living with dementia

On Monday evening, officers from Darlington response attended a disturbance at North Park Care Home.

 

Carers quickly raised the alarm after the man, living with dementia, became irritated, distressed and wanted to leave the home.

 

Sergeant Emily Knights and PC Sarah Grainger arrived and identified themselves as police officers which immediately calmed him down.

 

They listened to his concerns and reassured the man that they were there to help him.

 

After speaking with him for quite some time, they soon realised that he was a new resident and had only moved into the home that night.

 

As a thank you, the staff and carers dropped in a hamper full of sweet treats to the team yesterday.

 

A spokesperson from North Park Care Home said: “Your team approached the situation amazingly and took the time to listen to the gentleman and his concerns whilst keeping him calm.

 

“Your approach with the gentleman who has a dementia was outstanding.

 

“You went above and beyond to ensure that the gentleman and the care home got the correct referral from the emergency duty team and stayed to ensure our resident remained settled.

 

“I can’t thank you and your team enough for the support you showed to myself and my team.

 

“Just in the way of an update, the gentleman remained calm and settled. He is doing well and now getting the correct treatment.”
