“It is only on occasions such as this that we really appreciate how fortunate we are to be in the care of such an excellent police force.”
A couple who were hit by a dangerous driver (pictured above) have thanked police for their help following the incident.
The pair were on their way to drop off friends at Darlington Train Station when Aaron Drummond drove into them at 80mph.
Officers chased down Drummond as he scrambled out of the window of the Ford Transit van in a bid to escape and arrested him at the scene.
Thankfully, the couple were not seriously injured during the incident, which happened on the morning of Friday, June 7.
They have since written to the officers involved to thank them for their care and kindness at the scene.
“The police lady helped me from my car, emptied my shoes of glass and checked that our visitors in the back of the car were unhurt,” the woman said.
“They were due to catch the 11am train to London and, without hesitation, an officer was deployed to drive them there in time. We were all very grateful.
“Although unexpected, this close encounter left us with nothing but admiration for all the officers concerned; their speed, concern and kindness was the mark of an excellent team. We should like to thank all of the officers involved.”
Drummond, of Southend Avenue, Darlington, was charged with several offences, including driving while disqualified, dangerous driving, and driving with no insurance.
The 25-year-old appeared before magistrates on June 8 where he pleaded guilty and was remanded in custody ahead of his sentencing at Teesside Crown Court on Monday (July 8).
