More than 25 outstanding officers and staff have been awarded Chief Constable’s Commendations for their contribution to keeping their communities safe.
A presentation ceremony was held at Durham Constabulary Headquarters last week to recognise the extraordinary bravery and dedication.
Among the recipients was Special Constable Peter Hetherington who was off duty when he rescued a child who was seriously injured after falling into a disused quarry.
He didn’t think twice before climbing 40-metres down the cliff to rescue the youngster who was lying in a pool of water and get him much-needed medical treatment.
PC Jade Dodds was also off duty when she didn’t hesitate to help a man who fell ill while waiting for a train at Durham Railway Station.
She gave CPR before locating a defibrillator to provide potentially life-saving treatment while medical help arrived. The man, who was on holiday at the time, survived and was able to return home following treatment.
Officers from the Major Crime Team were recognised for their thorough investigation into the death of a two-year-old girl and a team of 14 officers and staff for their work which resulted 42 firearms related charges following an intelligence-led warrant executed in the Consett area.
Among the others recognised were:
Chief Constable Rachel Bacon told the assembled winners: “I feel really strongly that we should recognise these achievements because they are outstanding – they are all amazing examples of our officers and staff going the extra mile.
“All of them have done something to an exemplary standard – I am humbled by what they do and they should feel proud: proud of the time, energy and commitment invested in keeping the people of County Durham and Darlington safe.”
