"I'm so glad I took the leap, it's the best decision I've ever made," says Lynne, who's joined our team with eight other new recruits and five new switchboard staff – as part of an ongoing initiative to continue to improve call handling times.

 

"It's genuinely rewarding," she adds. "Every day is different; you’re constantly learning and you never know what incident is coming next.”

 

Our call handlers take part in a six-week training course before being placed on our call floor at HQ with a mentor. Part of their training involves shadowing colleagues and learning from real life scenarios.

 

Lynne continued: “I work with a great team of people and we’re really supportive of each other. This is such a different role to anything I’ve experienced before, but it’s so genuinely rewarding.

 

“Joining the team at 54 I was worried I might be too old, but my advice would be to never let your age get in the way of applying for a job that you’ve always wanted to do!”

 

Lynne’s favourite part? “Knowing I’ve played a part in helping to save people’s lives and that’s such an incredible feeling.”
