Prolific thief has suspended sentence revoked

A prolific thief who went on a shoplifting spree this week has been jailed.

Dwayne Peter Myers targeted local stores in Spennymoor on January 24 and 25, taking items such as coffee and laundry detergent.

Officers recognised the 37-year-old from CCTV and swiftly arrested and charged him with five thefts.

He was taken into custody and put before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court yesterday where he pleaded guilty to all offences.

Myers, of Morpeth, was sentenced to six weeks in prison and also ordered to pay £219 in compensation.

A previous 62-week suspended prison sentence for shoplifting was also revoked and added to his sentence.

Inspector Pete Newman said: “This type of offending not only harms local businesses but ends up costing every customer in the long-run and is totally unacceptable.

“Myers continues to refuse to learn his lesson so we are glad to see that, on this occasion, he has been put back behind bars and unable to commit any further crime anytime soon.

“We hope this will give some respite to the local stores and their staff and we will continue to hunt down and bring to justice anyone who targets local shops and stores in this way.”
