Robber who threatened shopkeeper with knife is jailed

A robber who threatened a shopkeeper with a knife has been jailed.

Michael Alan Dent carried out the attack at the Lifestyle Express store in Shildon on October 15.

The 45-year-old demanded the till from the terrified employee but when he failed to get it, made off with alcohol and cigarettes instead.

Thankfully, no one was injured after the brave employee managed to disarm him with a large piece of cardboard he used to knock the weapon out of Dent’s hand, who then fled the shop.

Officers blue-lighted to the scene, tracked Dent down and arrested him.

The 45-year-old, of Chilton, refused to answer any questions in interview but thanks to the evidence gathered, was charged with robbery and remanded into custody.

Dent was put before the court three days later and was found guilty following a trial.

He was sentenced to four-and-a-half years’ imprisonment at Durham Crown Court on November 17 and also ordered to pay costs.

Neighbourhood inspector, Adam Jassat, said: “This was a terrifying ordeal for the shopkeeper so we are glad to see he has been put behind bars and hope this brings some relief to the victim.

“We will not tolerate attacks on our businesses and will continue to work with shopkeepers and partners to take criminals like this off the streets where you live.”

A 34-year-old woman was also arrested in connection with the incident.

She has been released under investigation while further enquiries are carried out.
