A man has been jailed for more than four years after threatening two innocent members of the public with a needle and attempting to rob them.
Owen Trebell approached the first victim on the morning of January 2 this year on Northgate, in Darlington.
While the victim was waiting at the bus stop, Trebell asked them if they smoked and was told no.
Trebell then brandished a needle and asked the victim for their wallet.
They bravely refused and managed to run away.
A few moments later, Trebell targeted the second victim on Bondgate. He grabbed the victim from behind and pulled her backpack by the straps.
The victim managed to turn around and grab her backpack from Trebell.
He then punched her four times in the face, but she bravely fought back and then eventually managed to run away.
The 43-year-old was quickly identified as the suspect through CCTV, and he was brought into custody for questioning.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted robbery and possession of a bladed or sharply pointed article in a public place.
Trebell, of Darlington appeared at Durham Crown Court on Monday (April 14) where he was sentenced to four and a half years in prison.
Detective Constable Jamie Beadnall, from Darlington Serious Crime Team, said: “These were terrifying incidents for both victims who were going about their morning as normal.
“I would like to commend their bravery in standing up to Trebell when faced with a weapon and ensuring he was jailed.
“I hope this gives other victims the confidence to report and trust that we will bring offenders to justice.”
