Man charged following 'contracts' letter


​Last Thursday, 13th April a 39-year-old man from Lanchester, County Durham was charged with one offence of ‘malicious communications’.


This follows a letter being sent to the Chief Constable of Durham, which arrived at Police HQ on 28th February 2017.
Within this letter were the names of 57 Labour Durham County Councillors. 


The letter stated that “contracts” involving varying sums of money had been taken out on each of them, this also applied to any other prospective candidate standing for the Labour Party at the forthcoming May elections. 

Following a thorough police investigation, the suspect was brought into a police station, interviewed and then charged.


The man has been bailed, with a number of conditions to attend Peterlee Magistrates Court at 2pm on 16th May.
