Darlington man jailed after admitting non-recent abuse

A MAN who abused an underage girl in the 1970s and 80s has been sentenced to more than two years in prison.
Geoffrey Auton, of West View, Darlington, admitted three charges of gross indecency with a child under the age of 14. The offences took place between 1978 and 1984.
The 72-year-old appeared at Teesside Crown Court last Thursday (June 21) where he was sentenced to two years and six months in prison.
The court heard how his victim suffers from a number of ongoing health problems, including depression, as a result of the abuse she endured.
Auton was interviewed by police in December 2016 when his victim came forward and reported his crimes to the police.
Investigative Officer John Smith, from Durham Constabulary’s safeguarding team, said: “The victim has been extremely brave to come forward and report these crimes to police.

“Throughout the investigation she has shown great dignity given the abuse she suffered. I hope this sentence gives her some form of closure.”
Auton was also given a restraining order, made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and placed on the sex offenders register.
