Two teenagers have appeared in court following an attempted robbery.

The boys, who cannot be named for legal reasons due to their age, were caught following the incident in Newton Aycliffe last October when a man reported suspects wearing ski masks had tried to steal his scooter.

Thankfully the suspects did not get away with the scooter and instead rode off on a pit bike.

Officers identified the two boys after reviewing CCTV footage and promptly arrested the pair, aged 16 and 17.

A case was prepared and they were put before the court on Friday, March 10.

Following a trial, the 17-year-old was found not guilty of attempted robbery but was found guilty of aggravated vehicle taking, driving whilst disqualified and having no insurance.

He was sentenced to a total of eight months youth detention.

The 16-year-old pleaded guilty to attempted robbery, aggravated vehicle taking and breaching a criminal behaviour order.

He was remanded into custody and will be sentenced on March 31.

A Durham Constabulary spokesperson said: “This was a particularly frightening incident for the victim who felt so worried for his safety when threatened by these teenagers that he fell from his scooter trying to get away from them.

“Thankfully a number of residents came to the victim’s aid, chased the suspects away, and called us so we would really like to thank these people for their bravery and the information that helped officers get them both charged.”
