We have arrested two teenagers in connection with a fire at a supermarket in Stanley.

Police were called shortly after 6pm last Sunday (May 28) to the blaze which started at the rear of Iceland supermarket, before spreading into the roof of the building.

Four fire appliances and two raised ladders from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service were also dispatched to the scene to bring the fire under control.

Thankfully, nobody was injured during the incident, but the store suffered significant damage and will be closed for around ten weeks while repairs are carried out.

An investigation into the blaze has been launched by officers from Durham Constabulary and their extensive enquiries have resulted in the arrest of two teenage boys in connection with the incident.

The two 16-year-olds, who cannot be named for legal reasons, have been interviewed by officers. One has been released on bail, while the other has been released under investigation to allow for further enquiries to be carried out.

Sergeant Chris Davis, from Stanley Neighbourhood Police Team, said: “Deliberate fire damages communities, it damages property, but most of all it put people’s lives at risk, and we will not tolerate it. Anyone found to be setting a deliberate fire will be dealt with robustly.
