A man has been arrested following a fire in Coundon in the early hours of this morning.

Emergency services were called to an address in Cumberland Street shortly after 3am (April 28).

Thankfully, nobody was injured in the incident and our colleagues from the fire service were able rescue the occupants.

A 43-year old man was arrested shortly after on suspicion of arson and is currently in custody.

Detective Inspector Gareth Hodgson, from Bishop Auckland CID said: “I would like to reassure the community that this was an isolated incident and there is no wider concern for residents.

“An investigation has now been launched and we are looking for anyone with dashcam footage or CCTV of the incident to come forward.”
