Magistrates sign pointing right

A driver who caused a serious collision which left a woman fighting for her life has appeared at court.

Kyle Schofield appeared before magistrates this morning charged with two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

The 24-year-old of Reed Close, Coxhoe, pleaded guilty to the offences and was remanded in custody to appear at Durham Crown Court on June 21 for sentencing.

It follows a two-vehicle collision, which happened shortly after 1.15am on Sunday on the northbound carriageway of the A1(M), close to J62 Carrville, and involved a VW Golf and Ford Kuga.

A woman sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle, where she remains.

Two other women and a man were also treated at the University Hospital of North Durham.
