John North

A brave victim who was robbed of her childhood after being raped has spoken out on the day her attacker has been jailed.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said she finally felt she’d been given her life back now John North will spend more time in prison for his horrendous crimes against her and other victims.

North, 68, raped the woman when she was just ten years old.

She finally felt able to come forward to report the offence in 2017 - after decades of living with the trauma caused – when five other victims came forward.

She said: “At the time I was only ten years old when John North stripped me of my childhood with these horrendous offences against me.

“I will never get the time back but hopefully now I have closure and will be able to rebuild my life.”

North, formerly of Darlington, is already serving a ten-year prison sentence after being found guilty earlier this year of 11 counts of sexual assault on a child, two counts of indecent assault on a child, one count of assault by penetration and one of causing a child to watch as sexual act.

Today he was sentenced to a further 42 months after pleading guilty to further historic offences of indecent assault, indecency with a child and rape.

He was also made subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for life.

Detective Constable Jennifer Foster, of the Darlington Safeguarding Team, who led the investigation, said: “This has been a lengthy investigation and the victim has shown a great amount of courage in coming  forward after all of these years and relive what happened to her as a child.

“I hope she can now start to rebuild her life knowing that he is serving a prison sentence.

“If there are any other victims out there and I would encourage anyone who thinks they may have been affected to come forward.”

If you think you have been a victim of any crime, call 101.
