How to stay in control

  • Know that some people use the internet to be nasty to others
  • Never tell a stranger on the internet your address, your phone number or where you go to school
  • Always let an adult know you are going to use the Internet
  • Never use your real name in a virtual world, use a nick name
  • Never post a picture of yourself
  • Not everyone is who they say they are, the people we meet online don’t always tell us the truth, even if they send you a photo
  • Never meet someone you have made friends with on the Internet alone.
  • Always tell a trusted adult if you are worried or concerned about anything online
  • If someone does send you something that upsets you, remember to save the details and show it to an adult you trust.

How to report

Being online and using the internet is just like being in the real world - you can chat to people, play games and share pictures. But sometimes things happen which can make you upset. People may say nasty things to you which upset you, or you may see something that you don’t like.

On some particular sites, there will be a button usually in the top corner of a website which you can press to report anything that may have upset you.
