Counter Terrorism

The current threat level to the United Kingdom from international terrorism is Severe– which means an attack is highly likely.

There is no specific terrorist threat to County Durham and Darlington. However, terrorism remains a real and serious threat to us all.

Terrorist and violent extremism activity aim to damage community relations, undermine the values we share and create divisions.

The United Kingdom Government has a long-term strategy for countering terrorism known as CONTEST.

The CONTEST strategy has four strands;

Prevent – Stopping people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism/violent extremism
Pursue – Stop terrorist attacks by arrest and disruption
Protect – Strengthen our protection against terrorist attacks
Prepare – Mitigate the impact of a terrorist attack by preparing for the consequences

Our priority is to keep the public safe, by working together with key partners and all our communities to tackle terrorism.

Durham Constabulary has bespoke teams who work with key partners and the community focusing on the four strands of CONTEST.
