Advice for overseas visitors and students studying/living in County Durham or Darlington. After you arrive in the United Kingdom, you may need to register your stay with the police.

Foreign Nationals Registration

Covid19 reminder:

Due to the ongoing COVID restrictions in place within County Durham and surrounding areas, all foreign students are kindly reminded that if they have an appointment to register at the police station that they must attend alone and wear a face covering when inside the building. If you have been instructed to isolate or if you do not have an appointment, please do not attend the station, please book the appointment to take place after your 14 days of isolation, you will not face Home Office action for failing to register within the 7 days if you have travelled from a country where isolation is mandatory. We also strongly advise against gathering outside of the station as to comply with social distancing guidelines.​ 

New registations:

If you are visiting the UK then you may need to register with the police. Check your visa from the British Embassy to confirm this. If your visa and/or attaching letter stipulates that you are required to register with the police then this must be done within seven days.

You must register with the police if:

  • You are from one of the following countries – Afghanistan, Algeria, Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Belarus, Bolivia, Brazil, China, Colombia, Cuba, Egypt, Georgia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Libya, Moldova, Morocco, North Korea, Oman, Palestine, Peru, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Yemen 

And any one of the following conditions also apply: 

  • Your visa has the requirement to register
  • You are in the UK and switching to a visa which requires you to register
  • Your visa is for longer than six months
  • You are 16 years or older
  • On entering the UK your visa states ‘Police Registration Within 7 Days of Arrival’
  • The remarks section on the back of your Biometric Residence Permit states ‘Register/Report to Police
  • If you are already in the UK and applying for ‘Leave to Remain’ or ‘Extension of Leave to Remain’ and are notified in writing that you are subject to the Police Registration scheme   

If you are a new registration, you must bring the following:

  • Passport
  • £34.00 cash
  • Offer letter from University/CAS or employment contract
  • Proof of address in Durham e.g. Tenancy agreement/letter confirmation from university (including room number)
  • Visa / identity card / letter attached to visa with requirement to register with police 

Change of details / transferring to Durham from another force area:

If you change any of your personal or contact details whilst studying or working in the Durham Police force area, you will need to re-register with the Foreign National Registration Office. You must report within seven days any of the following changes: 

  • Any change of address 
  • Any change of college/university/course 
  • Any change of occupation 
  • Any change in marital status 
  • Any new landing conditions (re-entry visa) 
  • Any new passport details 
  • Any children born while you are in the UK exemption from police registration  

For the above changes you must bring the following:  

Change of address (Durham to Durham address). You must bring the following:

  • Police Registration Certificate
  • Proof of address in Durham e.g. Tenancy agreement/letter confirmation from university including room number
  • Passport
  • Visa / identity card / letter attached to visa with requirement to register with police 

Change of college / university / course / employment - you must bring the following:      

  • Police Registration Certificate
  • Offer letter from university/CAS or employment contract
  • Passport
  • Visa / identity card / letter attached to visa with requirement to register with police 

Change of marital status - you must bring the following:

  • Police Registration Certificate
  • Marriage certificate
  • Passport
  • Visa / identity card / letter attached to visa with requirement to register with police 

Visa update - you must bring the following:

  • Police Registration Certificate
  • Passport
  • Visa / identity card / letter attached to visa with requirement to register with police 

Passport update - you must bring the following:

  • Police Registration Certificate
  • Passport
  • Visa / identity card / letter attached to visa with requirement to register with police 

Transfer from another force. If you have already registered with the police in another force area and have now moved to the Durham area, you must update your Police Registration Certificate with this information. You must bring the following:    

  • Police Registration Certificate
  • Passport
  • Proof of address in Durham e.g. Tenancy agreement/letter confirmation from university including room number
  • Offer letter from university/CAS or employment contract
  • Visa / identity card / letter attached to visa with requirement to register with police  

Important notes

You could be fined £5,000 and jailed for six months if you do not register in accordance with your visa requirements.

Late registration could affect any future visa applications.

Please note your Police Registration Certificate is a legal document. You will be asked about the circumstances surrounding the loss or theft of your certificate during your appointment with the Police. Only apply once all methods of finding the certificate have been exhausted. 

Please ensure you have all relevant information in front of you before you commence the registration; change of details; request new certificate or transfer from another force process as you cannot save a partially completed registration form – all details must be completed in one sitting.  

Appointments will be either at Durham University campus or Chester-Le-Street Police Station, Newcastle Road, Chester–Le-Street, Durham, DH3 3TY depending on individual circumstances.

Please ensure that you attend 10 minutes prior to your appointment time. If you are late in attending your appointment we will be unable to deal with your registration.

Documentation/information required prior to commencing the police registration process online:

Personal details, contact details, family member’s details (if required), passport details, visa/travel details, study/employment details and access/ability to download a passport style photograph. 

Extension of stay

Extensions of stay within the UK can ONLY be granted by the Home Office. For an application form ring 0870 241 0645. Applications MUST be made to the Home Office BEFORE your existing conditions expire.
