Cheque & Plastic Card Fraud

The cheque and plastic card team will accept all matters referred to them in relation to stolen, compromised or counterfeit bank cards and cheques in order to recover evidence of fraudulent use; obtain witness statements from relevant financial institutions and retrieve relevant financial intelligence and information for the purpose of preparing arrest or further action packages for the investigating officer. In serious or complex investigations the cheque and credit card investigator may retain investigations requiring their level of expertise

The value of cheque and plastic card related crime cost the U.K. economy in excess of £430 million in 2004. The advent of “chip and pin” technology, which became compulsory in February 2006, will have an impact on this type of crime. Early indications have not shown a decrease in this type of fraud, merely a migration from fraud at the point of service towards cardholder not present fraud
