Durham Constabulary Dog Section was inaugurated in 1950 under a Sergeant and 2 Police Constables, with a Doberman bitch and 2 Alsatian dogs.
Police dogs have become an acceptable specialist arm in the fight against crime. There is not a Police Force in the UK that does not have a Dog Section. Here in Durham the Dog Section has operational patrol dogs, some of which are trained to support the tactical firearms unit, specialist 'drugs' dogs, explosive detection dogs and firearms detection dogs.
'Dog Section operates within the Personnel & Development with 20 Police Constables each with a General Purpose Dog. In addition each handler strives to operate a second dog which has a specialist role such as drugs or explosives detection.'
