Hate Incidents and Hate Crimes

A hate incident is any incident, which may or may not constitute a criminal offence, which is perceived by the victim or any other person, as being motivated by prejudice or hate.

Hate incidents and hate crimes are motivated by the offender’s prejudice or hatred towards someone because of –

This may be based on the victim’s membership or perceived membership of a particular group, but you do not have to be from a minority group or community to be a victim of hate crime.

What forms can it take?

Hate incidents and hate crimes can be committed against a person or their property. It can take many forms such as verbal abuse, harassment, assault, intimidation, bullying, damage to property and graffiti.

How can I report it?

Durham Constabulary will not tolerate hate crime or hate incidents.

It is important to report all incidents to help us in tackling hate crime. You may remain anonymous if you wish. The information you provide is extremely valuable. It enables us to identify areas of concern, patterns of behaviour, will help us to catch and prosecute offenders, and may help us prevent further incidents taking place.
