Puppy Cam
Durham Constabulary's latest litter of German shepherd pups - featured on the force's website "puppy cam" - are soon to meet their handlers.
At almost eight weeks old the furry five are now too lively for their antics to be captured effectively on the camera and, therefore, it is no longer in operation.
One of the quintet is destined for a life with Northumbria police with whom dad Jack is a serving police dog while the others will remain with Durham. Now they are receiving solid nourishment mum Becky is no longer in constant demand. Although formal training is many months down the line for the puppies, their handlers will ensure they learn through play and are socialized.
The puppy cam has attracted over 25,500 visits since it was set up before Christmas, some from as far away Australia, the United States, Canada and the United Arab Emirates. It's envisaged that it will be back in use once again when subsequent litters arrive through the force's dog-breeding programme.
In the meantime a "microsite" focusing on the force's working dogs is in the planning stages. With a complement of about two dozen general purpose dogs - mostly German shepherds - and other breeds in specialist roles to choose from, it promises to be popular. It is anticipated it will display profiles, pictures and video footage of the animals - including those in drug, explosives and currency detection roles - both in training and at work.
