Man arrested after incident in Bishop Auckland

22nd July, 2010

Police were called to Grey Street, Bishop Auckland, late last night after a report of a woman being assaulted in the street. A 35-year-old man suspected of being involved had locked himself in a house and was believed to be armed with a baseball bat and a samurai sword.

The street was cordoned off and a police negotiator was called; shortly after half-past three this morning the man gave himself up peacefully.

He was arrested for assault and criminal damage and is in police custody at Bishop Auckland, where he will be interviewed later today.

The 22-year-old victim was treated at Darlington Memorial Hospital but was not seriously injured.
