Murder inquiry launched after stabbings in Stanley

Police in Durham who launched a murder inquiry after two men were stabbed, one fatally, at a house in New Kyo, Stanley, on Saturday afternoon (July 17) have identified the dead man as 30-year-old Daniel Laidlaw, of Edward Terrace, New Kyo.
The stabbings are believed to have taken place in a two-bedroom property in Edward Terrace between about 3.30pm and 4pm.
The condition of a 27-year-old man, also believed to have been stabbed at a house in Edward Terrace, was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham in a critical condition but is now said to be improving.
The man leading the investigation, Detective Superintendent Neil Malkin, said it is believed the victims sustained their injuries during an altercation in the kitchen of the house in Edward Terrace.

Twenty-three-year-old John Donnison, also of Stanley, arrested in relation to the incident has been charged with Mr Laidlaw's murder and attempted murder. He is due to appear before Consett Magistrates in today.
