Chief ConstableAfter graduating from Northumbria University Jon Stoddart joined his local force in 1982 and was singled out for accelerated promotion. During more than sixteen years with Northumbria, he worked both in uniform and CID and was a Detective Sergeant in Newcastle, a Detective Chief Inspector in Sunderland and, as head of the force's Major Crime Team following his promotion to Detective Superintendent, was in charge of eight murder investigations on Tyneside and Wearside. He also led the inquiry into the brick attack which left a Sunderland police officer critically injured. As a result six men were jailed for a total of 44 years. During his time in Northumbria, Mr Stoddart worked as staff officer to the then Chief Constable, Sir John Stevens. He also spent three years as an area Commander in Tynemouth. As Assistant Chief Constable in Lincolnshire he had responsibility for Crime, Operations, Territorial Policing of the County and Criminal Justice. He is a member of the Association of Chief Police Officers' Crime Committee and chairs both the National Homicide Group and the Holmes II Executive User Group. Mr Stoddart took up the post of Deputy Chief Constable at Durham Constabulary on 17th February 2003 and became Chief Constable on 12th December 2005 |

Deputy Chief ConstableMichael Barton was born in Lancashire and attended Lancaster Royal Grammar School. He studied law at Newcastle University and graduated in 1978 with an LL.B. After a couple of years working on the family farm Michael joined the Lancashire Constabulary in 1980. He has served in most ranks in both uniform and detective roles. He has also worked in Training, Professional Standards, HQ Operations and Research and Planning. In 2002 he was promoted as Detective Chief Superintendent in Lancashire and was responsible for pulling together Lancashire's response in the immediate aftermath of the cockle pickers' disaster in 2004. He was head of Corporate Development and, for three years, Divisional Commander at Preston. Michael played a leadership role in embedding problem oriented partnerships as the policing philosophy in Lancashire. He was lead business user in the development of the renowned Sleuth Software and introduced Restorative Justice to Lancashire in 2006. He joined Durham Constabulary on 2 June 2008 as Assistant Chief Constable.

Assistant Chief ConstableMichael Banks was born in Wallsend on Tyne in 1963. He lived his early years in Whitley Bay, before graduating from Sheffield University with a Classics degree.He joined Durham Constabulary in 1985 and has served in a number of uniformed and detective roles throughout County Durham and Darlington. Specialist postings include two secondments to Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary. He has been Scientific Support Manager; Head of Criminal Justice Department and Head of Corporate Development. He was an Area Commander for over four years with responsibility for policing Darlington, Sedgefield, Wear Valley and Teesdale. He Chaired two (and was vice Chair of a third) Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships and was a board member of four Local Strategic Partnerships. From December 2005 to June 2008 he was a temporary Assistant Chief Constable with Durham Constabulary and had responsibility for all operational policing. He was the Vice Chair of the County Durham Partnership (which incorporates the Local Area Agreement) and member of the County Durham Strategic Community Safety Board. In June 2008 he was seconded as a temporary Assistant Chief Constable to Government Office North East and Durham County Council. At the former he leads on Counter Terrorism and at the latter he was Community Safety workstream lead in preparation for Local Government reorganisation. At the end of June 2009 he returned to Durham Constabulary as temporary Assistant Chief Constable with responsibility for Operational Policing, Partnerships and Professional Standards. His ‘outside’ responsibilities include being a governor at Blue Coat Church of England Junior School, Durham; Eastbourne Church of England Academy, Darlington and a member of the School of Infantry Independent Advisory Panel. |

Assistant Chief OfficerGarry Ridley was born in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear. He worked at Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council between 1985 and 1996 in a variety of roles in the Finance Department and Chief Executive’s Department. During his time there he completed two accountancy courses including the Chartered Institute of Public Finance & Accountancy.He then worked at Castle Morpeth Council in Northumberland as Assistant Borough Treasurer for 10 months before joining Wear Valley Council as Head of Finance in 1997. He became Strategic Director of Resource Management in 2001 at Wear Valley where he played a leading role in the management of the council. He also led the Councils 2008 Comprehensive Performance Assessment process during which the council was awarded an “excellent” rating. In May 2008, Garry became Acting Chief Executive of Wear Valley Council. Garry joined Durham Constabulary on 12 January 2009 as Assistant Chief Officer with responsibility for Finance, ICT, Estates and Business Support. He is currently studying for an MBA at Newcastle University. |
