Integrity Unit
Integrity is not negotiable it is essential, and there are no more important qualities for all members of Durham Constabulary than that they are honest and act with integrity.
Durham Constabulary has 'ground rules' for the personal conduct of police officers including special constables) and support staff. In addition, police officers must adhere to a Code of Conduct.
The remit of the Integrity Unit, is to protect the integrity of Durham Constabulary by preventing and detecting corruption, dishonesty and unethical behaviour.
What is Integrity?
Integrity is about the right people doing the right things in the right way. It means being honest and truthful, being trustworthy, and acting without prejudice or favour, or for personal gain. It is about behaving properly and appropriately, and it is the expected behaviour of all staff employed by Durham Constabulary.
What is Corruption?
Corruption covers a wide range of activities including dishonesty and unethical behaviour. Its origins and causes are varied and can result from failure to challenge wrongdoing, inadequate supervision, breaking and bending the rules, doing favours, misguided loyalties, temptation and greed, unauthorised association or contact with criminals or human information sources and, finally, sympathy with the concept of 'noble cause' corruption. These are examples, but the list is not exhaustive.
