The Contract Vehicle Recovery Service
Durham Constabulary operates an 'in house' Vehicle Recovery Scheme.
The scheme has a civilian manager who is supported by two administration officers.
There are 10 recovery operators contracted to the Force. Each has their own 'contracted' area. The selection criteria includes (among other things) Geographical Location (to ensure adequate coverage and response times); Vehicle and equipment standards; Training; Storage and Customer facilities.
The contractors are required to recover and store vehicles that are of 'Police Interest'. The term 'Police Interest' includes:
- Vehicles that are broken down (and causing an obstruction or danger)
- Vehicles involved in accidents (and causing an obstruction or danger)
- Burnt Out Vehicles
- Stolen Vehicles
- Suspect Vehicles (eg Used in crime, Suspect Identity)
- Uninsured and Unlicensed Vehicles
- Vehicles used anti-socially
- Vehicles causing an obstruction
- Abandoned vehicles (eg following a pursuit) - (NB Abandoned
end-of-life vehicles are the responsibility of the Local Authorities)
In 2005, a total of 6061 vehicles were recovered under this scheme.
