Reporting Crimes to the Telephone Investigation Unit
It is not always necessary to send an officer or a Crime Scene Investigator to all reported crimes. Some incidents can be dealt with over the telephone. This gives officers time to go to incidents, where their attendance is vital.
For some crimes such as:
- Shed break-ins.
- Garage burglaries (except those that have a connecting door to the house).
- Caravan burglaries (when no-one lives there).
- Vehicle crime.
- Minor thefts.
- Criminal damage.
you may be given an incident reference number and then one of our investigators will call you back.
We judge every incident on its merits, but normally where any of the following conditions apply, then someone will be sent to you and the scene:
- Offence in progress
- Violent and sexual offences
- Victim requests police attendance
- The offence is motivated by race or other form of hate crime
- The offence is of special interest - by series, patterns or problems associated with that area.
- The victim is considered "vulnerable" by age or infirmity
- Bogus official, misrepresentation or distraction type offences
- Burglaries with the exception of sheds in gardens & allotments
- Arson
- Where there is doubt that a crime has been committed
- The name of the offender is known or likely to be established
- Witnesses need to be interviewed
- Where the scene needs to be preserved for forensic or CCTV evidence
- Following initial investigation by the TIU, positive lines of
enquiry can be followed.
