Administration of Justice Department
The role of the Administration of Justice Department is to enhance the overall efficiency and quality of criminal justice processes within Durham Constabulary by:-
- Bringing offenders to justice
- Contributing towards the delivery of an effective and joined up local criminal justice system
- Increasing confidence in the criminal justice system thereby improving public reassurance
- Delivering a high quality of service to victims and witnesses
- Enhancing the professionalism of police investigations
- Working closely with all local criminal justice agencies and other key partnerships within County Durham and Darlington
- Ensuring the timeliness and quality of criminal justice processes in accordance with local and national targets
The department is headed by a chief inspector and is made up of three sections:
- Criminal Justice Units (CJUs)
- Witness Care Units (WCUs)
- Central Ticket Office (CTO)
There are three Criminal Justice Units across the force area, two in the North located at Consett and Peterlee police stations, and one in the South at Newton Aycliffe Police Office where CPS staff are also co-located. There are two joint police / CPS Witness Care Units located at Bishop Auckland Police Office, and the CPS building in Durham City. The Central Ticket Office is a centralised function for the whole force and is located at Police Headquarters. In addition the department provides a dedicated decision maker for all road traffic accidents occurring within County Durham and Darlington.
